THE BINDING RITES

In runic sigil magic, one creates a "bind-rune" by combining the forms of several different runes. Much like sigils are made today in the English language, Runemasters (and Runemistresses) would use the base meanings of a few runes to create a new one which had all of the combined aspects of its parts. While carving some runestaves a while back, I was inspired to "bind" the staves, rather than the letters. Thus, one would have a bind rune made up of several staves. I pictured it as a "God's Eye", those stick and yarn creations some of us made as kids. It also becomes possible to bind together words or pictures, instead of just a few symbols.

In these rites, I have described a few methods and circumstances in which one is able to "bind" words or symbols to achieve a desired result. I have also adapted two of the rites to group workings.

BINDING I

This method is for solo practitioners. Feel free to use any language, symbols, pictures, etc. for binding.

Preparations:

- At least three oblong pieces of wood.
- A "Magic" Marker or Paint
- A clear idea of your goal
- At least three symbols which represent that goal
- Some string or yarn

0. Gather all of the items listed above in front of you.

1. Statement of Intent:

"It is my will to bind these parts together to ___________."

2. Carefully draw the symbols or the words onto each side of a stave. You can carve them if your ambitious! While doing so, intone the following:

"FACH DIBINGOF"*

You may also want to charge each stave in your own way at this point.

3. Stack the staves on top of one another. You can either make a simple stack, or you can fan them out so that they make a circular shape (i.e. a "God's Eye").

4. Begin wrapping the center of the staves. For the circular variety, weave the string in an "over-under" and circular fashion. Once the staves are sturdily held together, begin the following chant. Try to keep the wrapping at an even pace in tune with the chant.

"FACH ONGO HOZBEK
FACH AP HOZBEK
FACH XIQUAL HOZBEK"

(We Spin the Web
We Change the Web
We Phenomenize the Web)

5. When you've completed the wrapping state : "So Mote it be". You may either want to hang up the stave as a subtle reminder or symbol of protection or dispose of it. I recommend burial as a symbol of potential life (like a seed).

BINDING II

This version of The Binding Series is meant to bind a group of people to a particular goal. It can be used as an opening rite for any sort of endeavor, such as a Project or any given working or vision. Each participant contributes what hishi thinks would be most beneficial to the end goal.

Preparations:

- A long flat stick (approx. one foot) for each participant
- Yarn or String
- Some "Magic" Markers or Paint
- A prepared name and attribute in the language of your choice

1. Open a circle, if desired. (Circle Consecration of Chaos is recommended)

2. Participants each take up a stick and begin writing their magical name on one side of the stave. (Use birth name, if no magical name has been chosen.) The names should be written in a language or code of choice (i.e. Runic, Hebrew, Greek, Enochian, Pig Latin...). On the other side, write one attribute which you consider to be beneficial to the group in aiding the successful completion of the chosen goal. While writing this, all should chant "FACH DIBONGOF" (It is our will)

3. M.O. begins with an opening statement:

WE COME SPEAKING MANY LANGUAGES
WE COME AS AUTONOMOUS ENTITIES
WE COME WITH OUR STRENGTH
WE COME WITH OUR WILL
WE SHARE A VISION
IT IS OUR WILL TO BIND OURSELVES
TO MANIFEST ______________. (A joyful revel?)
(All should repeat the Statement of Intent)
LET US UNITE.

4. Each participant holds out their stave. The M.O. begins by stating:

"I am ______________" (Name)

"I offer my __________________" (Attribute)

The M.O. Then starts to go to each participant and gathers the staves. One after the other, the participants state their name and their attribute or skill.

5. Once all of the staves are collected, the M.O. then begins to wrap the staves. Depending on the size of the group, either stack and wrap the staves, or fan them out and weave a web. All begin to chant: "FACH VEXIB" (We Bind)

6. When the staves have been wrapped enough to keep them together, the M.O. passes them around and each participant has a turn wrapping them. Continue the chant.

7. The M.O. digs a hole in the center of the circle, drops the bundle into it, and all say "So Mote it Be".

8. Banish by wrestling, hugging, general wild abandonment, large amounts of food and wine, or just plain laughter if you're all a bit shy.
