DIVINATORY SPECIAL #1

Each person participating will need a question in mantra form. The rite also requires a bag and enough fortune cookies to go around.

Preperation:

1. Prepare as many fortunes as there will be fortune cookies (the recipe below makes 2 dozen)
2. Prepare cookies (see recipe below).

STEPS 1 AND 2 MAY BE SKIPPED AND STORE-BOUGHT COOKIES USED, but it isn't as much fun.

The Ritual:

3. Participants stand so that the shape of a crecsent (similar to that of the fortune cookie) is made.

Statement of Intent:

It is my will to know __________________ (each person states their individual mantra).

4. The cookies are placed in the bag.

5. The bag is passed around slowly in whatever direction while participants visualize the bag as a large dragon (Long - a Chinese water dragon often dipicted on divination bones as holding the "pearl of wisdom" in his mouth. The cookies within are visualized as the "pearls of wisdom."

6. The M.O. states the invocation while the bag is being passed around.

Invocation:

GONL, AXBIM DOXOBUM
(Long, great dragon)

XINGOCDEN SEGWAR
(spit forth)

CHOFAJEM CHO UNGASCAB
(the pearl/mineral of wisdom/ouranos)

SEGWAR HEV CHEFWENCH
(from your mouth)

CHO OXO TUMPDOCRAHAR
(into our hands/zos-body)

BUJOB HEFLUBESQAD ULANGULE SODUV
(give us knowledge/ouranos by divination)

RENCEB DOXOBUM!
(come dragon!)

All participants join in chanting the last line until the passing of the bag becomes faster and someone, by "divine" inspiration, finally puts a stop to the movement.

7. Whoever stopped the bag reaches in and takes out a fortune cookie. S/he then passes the bag on to the next person, who also takes a cookie, and so on... The bag is tossed onto the ground somewhere.

8. Each person begins to chant their mantra-question and the fortune cookies are passed, slowly at first, from one person to next along the line of participants being careful not to drop the cookies, until a predetermined signal freezes the participants. This signal can be anything at all - the M.O. yelling "Stop", for inztance (or a tape of ridiculously oriental music coming to an end).

9. When the signal comes, all participants freeze, making certain that each person holds one cookie.

10. Everyone opens, eats, and reads -- the message inside being the answer to their question.

11. Laughter.

Fortune Cookie Recipe
(From Betty Crocker's Cookie Book)

Fortunes 2 1/2 x 1/2 inch.
1/2 cup all purpose flour.
1/4 cup sugar.
1 Tablespoon cornstarch.
Dash of salt.
1/4 cup vegetable oil.
1 Teaspoon almond extract.
2 Egg whites

Prepare paper fortunes. Heat oven to 300. Mix flour, sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Beat in remaining ingredients until smooth. For each cookie, spoon 1 heaping teaspoonful batter onto well greased cookie sheet: spread into 3 1/2 inch circle with back of spoon. Bake only 4 cookies at a time; cool cookie sheet and grease well each time. Bake until golden brown, about 10 minutes.

Working quickly, remove 1 cookie at a time with wide spatula; flip into protected hand. (Leave remaining cookies in oven.) Place paper fortune on center of cookie; fold cookie in half. Holding points of folded cookie with both hands, place center of fold over edge of bowl and pull points downward to make crease across center. Place cookie in ungreased muffin cup so it will hold its shape while cooling. If cookie cools before it is formed, heat in oven about 1 minute. Store in tightly covered container. Makes about 2 dozen.
